BS 9997 Fire Risk Management Systems Certification

What is BS 9997?

British Standard ‘BS 9997 – Fire Risk Management Systems’ details the requirements of an organisational fire risk management system which aims to minimise risk to life and make buildings safer for the people within them.

The BS 9997:2019 uses the Plan, Do, Check, Act model to help implement, maintain and improve a fire risk management system and to:

  • Measure compliance to fire legislation
  • Determine leadership accountability and commitment to fire safety
  • Monitor servicing and maintenance regimes, emergency planning and work on site
  • Establish fire risk assessment procedures and other related procedures
  • Assist in the effective day-to-day operational management of buildings

Why implement a fire safety management system?

Failures in fire risk management are often stated as a contributory factor in serious fires. BS 9997 can be used to improve accountability from the design stages through to occupation.

Article 11 of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to draw up and implement appropriate arrangements as are appropriate for the effective planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of the preventive and protective measures.

Even more stringent legislation is set to be introduced in the shape of the Building Safety Act, which applies to residential buildings over 18 metres. This also brings with it a requirement to implement a safety management system to manage building safety risks and includes tough new sanctions for those in breach of the law. Therefore, it is now more important than ever that buildings are built and maintained to a respectable standard, regardless of height.
